Aloha to the New College Basketball Season!
I am now officially in the Guinness Book of World Records! It was my privilege to call the 4:00AM EST tip-off of the college basketball season from the University of Hawaii on ESPN on November 18, 2008.I didn’t know if I should wear a suit, a Hawaiian shirt or my Sponge Bob PJ’s for this one. We not only tipped it off at 4:00AM EST but we also felt compelled to go to overtime so that my kids could see me at 6:30AM EST before they left for school! What a weird time to play a game but play we did. [ more ] |

A Revolution!
“I think we’re going to have a revolution, and Brandon Jennings, a kid from Compton, is going to start it,” Sonny Vaccaro said in a telephone interview conducted by the New York Times published on October 5th, 2008. Vaccaro was referring to Brandon Jennings who played last season at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. He was ranked as the #1 prep player by ESPN150 coming out of high school and signed with Lute Olsen and the Arizona Wildcats. During the summer, Jennings had a change of heart and decided to renege on his commitment to Arizona and instead play professionally in Europe for $1.2 million in salary and endorsements including a deal with Under Armour. Sonny Vaccaro has changed the face of high school, college and professional basketball as much as any non-coach in basketball history. He first turned Nike into a major college basketball equipment power broker by effectively executing a strategy that offered college basketball coaches money and free gear for exclusivity of the Nike brand in their individual basketball programs. He then left Nike and employed the same strategy for Adidas. In both cases, his influence spread throughout high school summer camps and tournaments with generous sponsorships to teams with players who had the potential to be professional players in the future.
